Fly in the day before

This is the single most useful piece of cruise advice there is. A ship will not wait for a delayed flight, and travel insurance rarely makes up for a missed sailing. Arriving the previous day turns a stressful morning into an easy one and gives you an evening in Miami.

If you must fly in on embarkation day, aim to land before 11:00 and choose a nonstop flight.

Getting from MIA to the port

Miami operates a flat taxi fare between the airport and PortMiami that covers the vehicle rather than each passenger, which makes it good value for two to four people with bags. Ride hailing is competitive but surges during the Saturday and Sunday morning embarkation rush.

Cruise line transfers cost more per person but include luggage handling and deliver you directly to the correct terminal, which matters at a port with multiple berths spread along a causeway.

Terminal and timing details

Check your terminal letter on your boarding documents. PortMiami terminals are spread out and a wrong drop off means a long walk with luggage in Florida heat. Most lines assign check in windows, and arriving outside yours can mean waiting outdoors.

Allow 45 minutes for the drive on a busy Sunday even though the map says twenty.

Luggage handling

  • Porters take your checked bags at the terminal curb and a tip is customary.
  • Keep travel documents, medication and swimwear in your cabin bag, as checked bags may take hours to arrive at your stateroom.
  • Attach cruise line luggage tags before you leave the hotel, not at the curb.
  • Return day disembarkation runs early, so book flights no earlier than midday.
