Singapore Changi Airport: Arrivals at the World's Smoothest Hub

Changi is consistently ranked among the best airports in the world, and the arrivals experience lives up to it. The main planning question is which terminal you land in and how you want to reach the city.

Terminals and Jewel

Changi has four passenger terminals connected by the free Skytrain and by pedestrian links. Jewel, the retail and garden complex with the indoor waterfall, sits next to Terminal 1 and is accessible landside from Terminals 1, 2 and 3. Terminal 4 is separate and reached by shuttle bus.

Because the terminals are so well linked, a terminal change here is a genuinely low stress activity, unlike at many hubs of comparable size.

How fast arrivals really are

Changi routinely clears arriving passengers from aircraft door to arrivals hall in 20 to 35 minutes. Automated immigration lanes handle most travelers, and baggage often reaches the belt before passengers do. Advance electronic arrival card submission is required and takes two minutes online, so complete it before you fly.

Reaching the city

The MRT is clean, cheap and reliable, though it requires a change at Tanah Merah and closes shortly after midnight. Taxis are metered, honest and queue quickly, with modest late night and peak surcharges. For most visitors staying in the Marina Bay or Orchard areas, a taxi is the sensible default after a long flight.

Worth knowing

  • Free city tours are available for eligible transit passengers with a long enough layover.
  • Rest zones, showers and quiet corners are plentiful if you land very early.
  • Changi's transit hotels are inside the terminals, which is useful for early morning onward flights.
  • Bringing chewing gum and certain items into Singapore is restricted, so check before you pack.
