Dubai International Airport: What Arrivals Actually Looks Like
DXB is one of the busiest international hubs in the world and is designed around transfer traffic. Arriving passengers benefit from that scale, provided they know which terminal they are in and how the metro connects.

Three terminals, very different experiences
Terminal 3 is the Emirates home and one of the largest airport buildings in the world. Terminal 1 handles most other international carriers, and Terminal 2 sits on the far northern side of the airfield serving flydubai and regional operators. Terminals 1 and 3 are connected airside and by metro. Terminal 2 is effectively a separate airport and requires a road transfer.
If your itinerary mixes Emirates and flydubai without a single ticket, plan the terminal change deliberately. A taxi between Terminal 3 and Terminal 2 takes 15 to 20 minutes in normal conditions.
Immigration and the walk
Smart gates handle a growing share of arrivals, and many nationalities receive a visa on arrival with minimal paperwork. The processing itself is quick. The distance is not. Concourse walks in Terminal 3 regularly run 10 to 15 minutes before you reach passport control, and the automated train adds another few minutes.
Baggage reclaim is generally efficient. A realistic door to curb figure for a Terminal 3 arrival is 40 to 60 minutes.
Onward travel from DXB
The Red line metro stops directly at Terminals 1 and 3 and reaches Burj Khalifa and the Dubai Mall in around 20 minutes. It does not run through the night, and the last services leave earlier than many arriving passengers expect, so check the current timetable if you land after midnight.
Metered taxis are plentiful, regulated and reasonably priced by international standards. They are the default choice for most visitors, particularly with luggage or in summer heat.
Seasonal reality
- Between June and September, outdoor waiting is genuinely difficult. Stay inside until your car arrives.
- The airport peaks late at night, with heavy arrival banks between 23:00 and 03:00.
- Currency exchange rates inside the terminal are poor. Card payment is accepted almost everywhere in the city.
- Free airport wifi is fast and easy to join, which makes ride hailing simple on arrival.
