Comparing your options
Typical characteristics rather than live prices or timetables. Always check the operator on the day you travel.
| Option | Typical journey | Cost character | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pre booked private car | 60 to 80 min | 900 to 1,400 THB | Most travelers |
| Airport metered taxi | 60 to 90 min | 1,000 to 1,600 THB | Walk up convenience |
| Shared minibus | 80 to 120 min | 200 to 300 THB per person | Solo budget travel |
| Airport bus plus local transport | 2 hours plus | Under 200 THB | Very light travel |
The road matters
The route runs south along Route 402 before cutting west across the hills into Patong. The final descent, known locally as the Patong hill road, is steep and winding. It is safe with an experienced driver, but it is not a road to rush, and it is genuinely unpleasant in heavy rain.
Booking versus arriving and hoping
Pre booked transfers are inexpensive and remove all negotiation. A driver meets you in the arrivals hall with a name board, the price is fixed and the vehicle is air conditioned. Given the transfer takes over an hour, the small premium over a shared minibus is usually worth it.
Official airport taxi counters are inside the terminal and issue a receipt with the fare. Avoid drivers who approach you before the counter.

Once you are in Patong
Local transport on Phuket is expensive relative to the mainland, and tuk tuk fares for short hops are often surprisingly high. If you plan to move between beaches regularly, factor this into your budget or consider a hotel within walking distance of what you want to see.
Seasonal and safety notes
- Monsoon season from May to October brings heavy rain that slows the hill road.
- Red flags on west coast beaches mean dangerous rip currents and should always be obeyed.
- Scooter rental is popular but accident rates are high and insurance often does not cover it.
- Karon and Kata beaches are 15 to 25 minutes further south than Patong.
