Your resort arranges it, but you pay for it
Almost every resort books your transfer on your behalf and adds it to your bill. This is not optional in most cases, since resort islands are private and served only by their own boats or by contracted seaplane operators. Confirm the cost when you book the room, because a transfer can add several hundred dollars per person to a trip.
Seaplanes only fly in daylight
This single fact shapes many Maldives itineraries. Seaplane operations run roughly from sunrise to sunset. If your international flight lands in the evening and your resort is seaplane served, you will overnight in Male or Hulhumale and fly out the next morning. Some resorts cover that hotel night, many do not.
Seaplane schedules are also weather dependent and are grouped to fill aircraft, so waits of one to three hours at the seaplane terminal are common and normal.
Speedboats and luggage
Speedboat transfers run at most hours, including at night for nearby resorts, and have generous luggage allowances. Seaplanes have strict weight limits, often around 20 to 25 kilograms per person, with excess charged or sent on a later flight. Pack with that in mind if you are flying by seaplane.
Arrival day advice
- Resort representatives meet guests at a clearly marked desk just outside arrivals.
- Keep swimwear and essentials in your cabin bag in case luggage follows on a later transfer.
- The seaplane terminal has lounges, some free and some paid by the resort.
- Local island guesthouses use scheduled public ferries, which do not run on Fridays in many cases.
