Why flying loses
The flight itself is barely an hour, but the door to door total tells a different story. Getting to LaGuardia or JFK, clearing security, boarding, flying, and then travelling from Logan into central Boston adds up to four or five hours in practice, with far more failure points than a train.
Rail stations sit in the middle of both cities. That is the whole argument.
Acela versus Regional
Acela is faster, quieter and has better seating, and its business class is the standard fare rather than an upgrade. The Northeast Regional takes around thirty minutes longer and often costs half as much. If you book early, the Regional is excellent value. If you book late, the price gap sometimes narrows enough to justify Acela.
Buses and driving
Modern intercity coaches are comfortable, have wifi and power, and cost very little. Their weakness is I-95 traffic, which can add an hour without warning, particularly on Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings.
Driving makes sense only if you need the car at both ends. Boston parking is expensive and the city's road layout is unforgiving to visitors.

- Amtrak fares rise as departure approaches, so book two to four weeks ahead.
- Penn Station in New York and South Station in Boston both connect directly to local transit.
- Weekend trains fill quickly in summer and during autumn foliage season.
- Check whether your ticket allows a free change, as flexibility is often worth a small premium.
